Of cubic form, this work is entirely covered with decoration of exceptional density, combining stylised vegetal motifs, geometric friezes, graphic interlacing and abstract forms within a decorative language freely inspired by Art Nouveau and 20th-century decorative arts.
Each face develops its own carefully organised universe: imaginary landscapes, stylised floral compositions, symmetrical motifs and interlacing patterns follow and overlap one another. The borders are highlighted by a remarkable interplay of undulating and marbled lines, variously evoking agate, antique marbled papers and mineral formations.
The upper section is decorated in low relief with scrolling vegetal motifs and radiating patterns standing out against a dark, woven-effect ground. The entire decoration is worked into the thickness of the material, with pronounced modelling and subtle reliefs giving the surface an almost sculptural quality.
What immediately strikes the eye is the profusion and richness of the ornamentation. The work evokes both certain 19th-century Orientalist decorative schemes and the aesthetics of Art Nouveau, the world of antique textiles and the precious quality of cloisonné enamels. Despite this abundance of decoration, the composition retains remarkable coherence through a perfectly controlled colour palette dominated by burnt oranges, deep blues, greens and blacks.
A unique piece characteristic of Claire Roger's work, this cube perfectly illustrates her ability to combine ornamental richness, graphic experimentation and mastery of volume.
