An individual drinking vessel designed for liquids, generally hot beverages, the cup is fitted with a vertical side handle. It is cylindrical in form, with a flat base resting on a low foot. Its matching saucer, also with a flat base, rests on a discreet low foot and features a slightly inclined rim.
The term “litron” cup was adopted by the Vincennes manufactory around 1752. This model was inspired by the tankard, a popular drinking vessel at the time, and developed in response to the growing consumption in Europe of hot beverages such as tea, coffee and chocolate.
Hard-paste porcelain.
The cup and its matching saucer feature a broad white-ground band decorated with a polychrome design of interlacing garlands of flowering and leafy stems, punctuated with flowers. These sinuous garlands are enriched with small reddish-orange scrolls and stylised florets. The lower section of the cup and the well of the saucer are decorated with a rich light brown ground.
